New Year's Eve

The Hanging Girl

New Year's Eve marks the moment when Pirjo tells Atu that she is pregnant. Against the community’s open-air celebration of renewal and future beginnings, her news changes a private knowledge into something shared between them.

Setting and Ritual

The celebration takes place beneath the open sky, on the beach, where the community forms a ring around a fire. Atu praises the cycle of the year, and each person expresses a sense of belonging grounded in the idea that life offers new chapters. The coming year is imagined as the source of their future deeds. After a round dance, the gathering disperses toward the rooms for the first quiet meditation of the year.

Pirjo’s Disclosure

As the others leave, Pirjo takes Atu’s hand and thanks him for who he is and for the person he will soon become. She guides his hand to her abdomen and tells him directly that she is pregnant. His face begins to glow; Pirjo, seeing his response, feels that her newly found harmony and happiness are beyond threat.

Significance

The sequence makes the ritual’s language of new beginnings concrete in Pirjo’s life. A ceremony focused on communal continuity and future action becomes the setting for an intimate announcement about a child. The disclosure also marks a change in what Pirjo carries alone: she no longer has to hold this knowledge without Atu. The happiness that follows is real but temporary; the narrative later notes that her inner balance is destroyed after two and a half months.
